The Class page is used to manage the smooth and efficient running of a class within Compass.
This page brings together a large amount of information for students, staff and parents relating to the class, so that information and news can be shared easily.
To access the class page as the teacher of the class simply hover over the Teaching and Learning menu (pencil icon) and click the class name from the drop down list, like so:
Alternatively if you are not the teacher of the class whose class page you want to access, type the name of the class into the search bar at the top of Compass and select the class from the list of options that appear.
All classes within Compass have their own class page. Please keep in mind that classes are different from subjects and the two should not be confused. For example Year 7 PE is a subject, whereas 7A PE with John Smith is a class. As a result 7A PE with John Smith has a class page on Compass, while the subject of Year 7 PE has a subject page (click here for to see the Subject Page article).
The class page comprises a number of tabs which relate to different areas of information storage. Each of these tabs will be explained more fully below.
This page shows information relating to the current, or upcoming session of the class.
On the Dashboard tab, information including the normal or replacement teacher for the session, the location, the lesson plan, etc... are stored for easy accessibility. Where enabled, students and/or parents can also email the staff member in charge of the session of the class.
Staff, students and parents can also easily see the date and time for a session, and scroll forwards or back through the scheduled sessions of the class to view the same information for other sessions. If staff, students or parents want to see information relating to a specific session of the class, clicking on the drop-down arrow next to the date and time will display a list of all scheduled sessions for the class, from which the required session can be selected
This is the easiest page from which staff can mark the roll. Please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Roll" for further information on how to mark the roll for a class.
The Dashboard tab includes the Tools list for staff (parents and students cannot see this section), along the right-hand side of the page. From here they can print and export various information relating to class enrolments, notices, roll comments and flags, Teacher Notes and Lesson Plans. Staff also have the options to email members of the class community, the students enrolled in the class or their parents, and other staff or students associated with the Subject to which the class belongs.
Student Meals | This takes the teacher to the Bulk Orders canteen tab to view orders students have. Bulk orders can be made on behalf of students for staff with the applicable permission. Please refer to the Canteen article for further details. |
Send an email | Expands a range of options to generate an email. |
Class enrolments list | Gives a range of options to generate class lists and also access to the class handbook. |
Roll summaries | This allows you to download comments made in the roll or roll flag information. |
Lesson details | Here you can access all lesson plans and teacher notes. |
Reports | Click here to view the Page Access report. |
Teacher Notes is a section where the normal class teacher can leave messages for replacement teachers or vice versa. These notes are only available for staff to see and will not be published to parents or students.
Lesson Plans can be created from scratch by clicking on the 'Create New Page' link, or they can be uploaded from a template using the 'Choose Page from Class Resources' link. If your school has a lesson plan template, we recommend uploading this to the School Resources module, then pushing it to the Class Resource tab for staff to create the lesson plans. Please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "School Resources" for further information on this process.
The Class News Feed section works in a similar way as the Newsfeed module on the homepage of the Compass portal for your school. Please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Newsfeed" for further details.
The main difference between the Newsfeed module on the homepage and the Class News Feed is that on the Class News Feed, staff will not need to select an audience for the post; this will automatically be published to students enrolled in the class and their parents (they will see the class news item showing in their main newfeed in their parent/student portal).
Also, the Class News Feed item will show on the class dashboard for each session of the class, whereas Teacher Notes and Lesson Plans will only show on the dashboard for the session of the class to which they apply.
You can add a customised header image to a class page. To do so, click the camera icon next to the class code and select the image from your device to be uploaded. The image can be a .jpg or .png file that is 926 x 140 pixels in size.
The Learning Tasks tab shows a list of all Learning Tasks that have either been created for the Class or pushed to the Class Resources from the School Resources module or Subject page.
This tab also allows for the management of Learning Tasks, including results entry, conversations relating to the Learning Task(s) and students enrolled to undertake the tasks. For further information, please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Learning Tasks".
If Learning Tasks have already been associated with your class, you will see a list of them on this tab. Click the Actions button (spanner icon) at the right of the row to perform an action. Available actions are Export Results, Print Results, Edit, and Delete. Clicking the name of the task will open the results entry screen, which is also where assignments can be marked as received.
Continuum allows for the tracking of student achievement based on different Progression dimensions.
For a full explanation of Continuum and how to use this module, please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Continuum".
The Resources tab is a storage area for teaching resources that staff members can use to facilitate the learning of students within the class.
Resources can be added to the class page in the same way they can be added to a subject page or to the School Resources section of Compass. Resources that are added to the class page are not also added to the associated subject page.
Students, Parents, and Staff can access the Resources tab on class pages, and will be able to access any of the resources that they have permission to see based on the Permission matrix for the resource.
The 'Enrolments' tab shows a list of currently and previously enrolled students for the class.
If a student is supposed to be enrolled in the class, but doesn't appear on the roll, please check the enrolments tab carefully for their name and verify that the associated enrolment dates are accurate. If the student is listed with a current enrolment in the Enrolments tab but is not showing on the roll, please contact your school's Attendance/Enrolments administrator for resolution.
The Attendance tab gives staff an overview of the attendance data for students enrolled in the class.
This is the same sort of attendance chart that is available across Compass, allowing you to get drill-down data by clicking on the individual cells.
Please keep in mind that not all classes will necessarily have associated attendance data, especially some primary school classes which exist for reporting purposes only.
There is also the option to view half day attendance data on the 'Half Day Attendance' tab.
Right clicking on a cell will allow you to update student attendance if required.
The Sessions tab shows a list of all sessions scheduled for the class with associated data such as location, teacher, whether or not a lesson plan exists for that session and the roll marking mode.
Sessions of a class are usually created by the importation of the school's timetable file, either from a third party provider or via the Schedule Builder module in Compass. For custom classes, sessions need to be created manually. Further information on how to manage this can be found in the Knowledge Base article titled "Custom Classes".
The Analytics tab displays all associated Analytics data that has been imported into Compass.
For further information on how to import data into the Analytics module, please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Analytics".
