Subject Page

The Subject page is used to manage the smooth and efficient running of subjects within Compass.

On a subject page you will see all the classes that are in the subject, who the lead teacher is, any Resources associated with the subject, and subject-wide Learning Tasks.

Subject pages can be accessed by searching for them by title in the main Compass search bar or from the Subjects and Classes page on Compass, which is available under the Teaching and Learning menu (pencil icon), by clicking on the subject code or long name, which are each blue and a hyperlink.

Clicking this link will take you to the Subject page for the selected subject.

The Subject page features three tabs - Classes, Learning Tasks, and Resources.

Classes Tab

The Classes tab of the subject page shows each of the classes that are within this subject, and the lead teacher for the class. Clicking the class code (under the Name/Code column on the left) will take you to the Class Page, and clicking the teacher's code (under the Lead Teacher column on the right) will take you to the user profile of the lead teacher.

Learning Tasks Tab

The Learning Tasks tab of the Subject page shows all subject-wide Learning Tasks.

Creating and managing tasks from the Subject Page allows tasks to be applied to all classes within the subject, cutting down on administration time and ensuring that the task is identical for all classes within the subject.
This tab also allows for the management of Learning Tasks, including creating and editing tasks, entering results, marking tasks as received, conversations relating to the Learning Task(s) and students enrolled to undertake the tasks. For further information, please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "Learning Tasks".

You can curate which Learning Tasks display in the Grid View by clicking 'Selected Tasks' and deselecting any tasks you do not want to display.  Your selection settings will be retained ongoing.  Any Learning Tasks created after you have made selections will be displayed by default; you can deselect them if required.

Please Note: You can sort by class, to do so, click the grey arrow in the 'Class' column and select your preferred sort type from the available options.  You can also tick the 'Move inactive students to bottom' option to have students no longer active in the subject shifted to the bottom of the grid

Resources Tab

The Resources tab is a storage area for teaching resources that staff members can use to facilitate the learning of students within the subject.

Resources can be added to the subject page in the same way they can be added to a Class page or to the School Resources section of Compass. Resources that are added to the Subject page are not also added to the Class page - users will need to access the Subject page to view or download these resources. Students, Parents, and Staff can access the Resources on Subject Pages, and will be able to access any of the resources that they have permission to see based on the Permission matrix for the resource.

When staff view the Resources tab they will see all of the subject-wide Learning Tasks, but these will not be visible to students or parents on the Resources tab.

Please refer to the Knowledge Base article titled "School Resources" for further information on this.

Any Resources created at the subject level will be archived with the subject at the end of the academic year in which the subject exists. If staff want or need to use a resource across multiple academic years, it is best that it is created in the School Resources module, then pushed out to the Resources tab of the Subject page.

Adding a Subject Coordinator

Subjects can be allocated a Subject Coordinator.

The Subject Coordinator has the following permissions:

To view/add Subject Coordinators for your school's subjects,  go to the Subjects and Classes page in Compass, which is available under the Teaching and Learning menu (pencil icon).

Clicking on the 'Pencil' edit icon allows you to allocate a staff member as the 'Subject Coordinator' or edit the existing one.

FAQ

What is the benefit of using the Subject page over the Class page?

Creating resources or tasks against the Subject page ensures that the items are identical for all classes. If you create a task or a resource on multiple class pages and then change it in a way (for example rewording it or changing the grading components) you would need to make this change on any other class page with the task or resource. By creating the task or resource on the Subject page any change is made to the source, thus cutting down on double handling and simplifying the process of making any changes.
