Thermal Printer Setup

Thermal Printer Setup

Overview

A thermal printer can be used to print arrival/departure slips and visitor passes.
Please follow the below steps to set up a thermal printer.

Powering the thermal printer

1 -  Plug the thermal printer into the LAN and plug the power adapter in.  Then turn it on and wait a minute.

2 - Using a pen or a pin press the button on the back which will print out diagnostic information for the thermal printer.

3 - Importantly ensure that DHCP is set to 'Enable'.

4 - Retain the print out as you will need the IP Address when connecting the printer to Compass

A CompassLink instance will need to be able to contact the thermal printer based on its IP Address. The easiest way to achieve this is to ensure that there is a CompassLink instance running on the same LAN.

Connecting the thermal printer to Compass

Now that the hardware and external connections to the printer are setup you will need to configure the printer in Compass.

1 - Ensure you have a black and white school logo uploaded.  You can check this by going to the Tools menu (cog icon) and selecting Administration Tools.  Select 'Update School Logos' from the list.  Here you can view the logos already uploaded, and update them as required.

Note: Sometimes the standard school logo won’t look translate well in black and white. If this is the case the school can re-upload an alternative logo for the thermal printer.

2 - To register the printer in Compass, go to the Tools menu (cog icon) and selecting Administration Tools.  Select 'Client Manager' from the list.  Head to the Client Manager page. Click 'Register Client' and select 'Register Thermal Printer' from the list of options.

3 - Give the printer an appropriate name, input the IP address that appeared on the print out you have from the printer and select a CompassLink instance that is able to talk to the printer.  When you have added all the required information, click 'Register'.

The thermal printer will then be added to the list on the Client Manager page.  You can click the cog icon next to the printer to print a test page.
