Importing NAPLAN Results Data

NAPLAN results data is imported from your state NAPLAN data provider. Users will either require a unique login for their NAPLAN data service or will need to request the files from the provider. See below for a chart explaining where to get the data from based on your school type.

Import Data

1. Login to Compass and go to the Teaching and Learning Menu (pencil icon) > Analytics

2. Select 'Add Analytics Cycle'

3. A pop-up titled 'Add Analytics Cycle' will appear. From the 'Cycle' drop-down box, select NAPLAN.  The 'Import Type' will be 'Default'.

4.Select 'Choose File' next to NAPLAN Results and then navigate to the location where the data was exported and saved. Select the .CSV file that contains information similar to the example below and click 'Open'. (The file typically has the phrase 'OutcomeLevelData' in the file name.)

Example CSV Header + Line:

5. Select 'Choose File' next to NAPLAN Question Scores and, again, navigate to the location where the data was exported and saved. Select the .CSV file that contains information similar to the example below and click 'Open.' (The file typically has the phrase 'QuestionLevelData' in the file name.)

Example CSV Header + Line :

6. Once the files for results and question scores have been selected, set your Staff and Parent visibility and click 'Create'.

This will open a pop-up where you will be able to view details of the cycle that has just been created. The cycle name and type will be visible in the top left-hand corner, areas of assessment in the bottom left-hand corner, and the students enrolled on the right-hand side.

The areas of assessment and the students enrolled in the cycle are all automatically pulled from the file you imported.

When you first open the Analytics module you will see a list of all cycles that have been created in Compass for all test types. Clicking on the pencil icon beside any of these NAPLAN cycles will open this pop-up menu with cycle details for you.

Cycle Status

On the Analytics page, you will see a status column which lets you know the status of all Analytics cycles in Compass. When your NAPLAN cycle is originally created, it will appear in this list as 'Hidden.' In order to make results visible in Compass, you will need to change this status to ReadOnly.

To do this, you will first tick the box to the right-hand side of the cycle in question. Then click on 'Selected Cycles' > 'Set Cycle Status To' > 'Readonly.'

Once this has been done and the cycle is visible to staff, you will then see NAPLAN results for the year in question appearing on the profile of any students enrolled in the cycle.

There are three setting for Cycle Status:

1. Open - the cycle is open, students can be enrolled into it and results (for tests where import is not available) can be manually entered for students. This status is not relevant for NAPLAN test cycles.
2. Read Only - the results contained within the cycle can be viewed in Compass but not edited.
3. Hidden - the cycle has been imported to Compass but results are not visible in the portal.
