Learning Task Self Assessment

Learning Task Self Assessment

Overview

When creating a Learning Task, you can set grading components as 'Self Assessment' which will make them a component within the task that the student provides results/information for rather than the teacher.  This allows teachers to obtain student self assessment and feedback.  This information can also be set as included on Semester Reports.

Adding a Self Assessment Component to a Learning Task

You can add one or more self assessment components to a Learning Task.  To do so, you need to add the applicable component and set it as a 'Self Assessment' component when creating the Learning Task, or by going in and editing an existing Learning Task.

When Creating a Learning Task:

For complete details on how to create Learning Tasks in Compass, please refer to the 'Creating a Learning Task' article from our Knowledge Base.

At the point in the process where you are on the grading 'Components' tab in your new task, select the applicable component or components that you want to add as 'Self Assessment' from the blue coloured options by clicking the plus icon for the component.  You can also add any other components you require for the task at this time.

You will see all the selected components for the task on the right hand side.

For the ones you need to set as 'Self Assessed', click the edit pencil icon.

Update the 'Name' to the applicable title for students and then tick the 'Self Assessment Component' box.

Do this for any of the added components that you need to set for students to complete.

Click 'Ok' in the bottom right of the 'Component' tab to save your added components to the Learning Task.  Continue to follow the steps to complete setting up your new Learning Task.

Adding to an existing Learning Task:

Locate the existing Learning Task and click the tool icon to select 'edit'.

Click to the 'Components' tab within the task and then click 'Add Component'.

Click the plus icon for any of the blue coloured components that you want to add as student Self Assessment components.

Click the edit pencil icon for the added component that you want to set as 'Self Assessment'.

Give it the correct Name to indicate what is required of the student and then ensure the 'Self Assessment Component' box is ticked.  Click 'Accept' to save your changes.

The component (or components if you added multiple) will be listed along with the other components for the Learning Task.

Opening Self Assessment Components to Students

With any Learning Task, for students (and/or parents) to see the task, it must be set to visible in the Learning Task's security matrix.

For the students and/or parents to see any results/feedback added by the teacher, the 'Grading Visible' must also be enabled.

Please Note: The settings on the Learning Task's Security Matrix will correspond with the specific settings for each component within the task.  You can view the component settings on the Component tab.
In the below example, the 'ARTER Exploring and Responding' component is set to 'Hidden' for students and parents so even when the overall task visibility/grading is turned on for students/parents, they would not see this component.

For components set as 'Self Assessment', please ensure the 'Parent/Student Access' column is set to 'Students Only' or 'Students & Parents' to ensure students can add their content when self assessment for the task is opened to them.

When the Learning Task is set to visible for students, you can then open the Self Assessment components to the students.
To do this, go to the Learning Task on the applicable subject or class page and click the title to open the task results entry screen.

Click 'Actions' and then 'Set Self Assessment To' and choose 'Open'.

You will see the a button on a student's results entry screen either called 'Open' or 'Locked' depending on the current status for the student.

OpenIf the 'Open' button is displayed it means currently that Self Assessment is locked for the student.  Clicking the 'Open' button will open it for that student.
LockedIf the 'Locked' button is displayed it means currently that Self Assessment is open for the student.  Clicking the 'Locked' button will lock self assessment for that student.

To close Self Assessment at any time, simply click 'Actions', then 'Set Self Assessment for All' and choose 'Locked'.  This will prevent the students from adding to or editing the Self Assessment component fields.

Please Note: To ensure any Self Assessment content included in Semester Reports is not able to be edited after issue, we recommend locking the Self Assessment components for a Learning Task once students have been given the allocated time to complete their responses.
When Self Assessment for a task is opened to students, they will see a dashboard notification in the portal.

The student needs to click the link and it will open the Learning Task which will have a 'Self Assessment' tab containing the field (or fields if multiple Self Assessment components are included) for the student to enter their response into.

Including Self Assessment Components in Reports

When a Learning Task has been set for inclusion in a Semester Report, you can also include the student Self Assessment component for the task.

To do so, when you are setting a Learning Task for inclusion in a Semester Reporting cycle, ensure the Self Assessment component (or components) that you want included is showing as enabled on the 'Reports' tab within the Learning Task.  You can access this tab by locating the Learning Task on the applicable class or subject page in Compass, clicking the tool icon and choosing 'edit'.

Click to the 'Reports' tab and ensure the applicable Self Assessment components that you want included on the Semester Report are showing as enabled.

Please Note: For Learning Task Templates or Learning Tasks stored in School Resources, you can preset any Self Assessment components to be included in Semester Reports also.  To do so, locate the Learning Task, use the edit option and click to the 'Reports' tab.  Ensure the Self Assessment component is showing as enabled (green tick).

Viewing Student Self Assessment Responses

You can view what students have entered for the Self Assessment component by clicking onto the Learning Task tab of your class or subject page, clicking into the specific task and then clicking to the 'Grid View' sub-tab.

Alternatively you can go to the 'Detailed Results' tab and view the responses individually.
